LOVE is still strong with a Thatcham couple who recently celebrated 50 years of marriage.
John and Sylvia Cummins, both aged 72, met 55 years ago when Mr Cummins sister; Mary, bought Sylvia home after work.
Mr Cummins was so taken with her that he asked if she would go to the pictures with him. Five years later they got married in in Saint Mary’s Church, Thatcham, on September 21 1963 after a three-year engagement.
Mr Cummins said: “The day I married Sylvie was the happiest day of my life. If I could live my life again I would marry her again.”
And things got especially hot on their honeymoon after their London hotel caught fire.
“We were lucky to have got alive but we stayed in the hotel for another week. We had each other that was the main thing,” Mrs Cummins said.
Three years later, during England’s world cup year, their daughter Tracy arrived followed by son Mark in 1969.
Mrs Cummins, who was born deaf and has to lip-read her husband, spent several years learning to speak at a special school.
She said: “John has been very caring about me and looks after me. He has been my ears and has taken me everywhere I wanted to go.”
The couple share a love of music, dance and socialising and say this has kept them together for more than half-a-century.
“We share everything and work together on the garden. That’s what it’s all about,” Mrs Cummins said.
“We’ve had many wonderful times together. We go out a lot and have a lovely time with friends.”
The couple recently spent 12 days celebrating in the US, visiting New Orleans and travelling the Mississippi on a paddle steamer and visiting Elvis Presley’s house Graceland.
