Miley Cyrus was an all-time favorite for every little girl when she was known as “Hannah Montana” on Disney Channel.
The television show, Hannah Montana, ran from 2006-2011. After her show ended, Miley wanted to break away from the “Disney Girl” image, which is understandable. By the end of her show, she was 17 years old and had been on the show since she was 12.
Since her show ended, social media has been hating on her. Miley doesn’t seem to meet media standards like Taylor Swift or Selena Gomez. This causes social media to put her down as a “slut” and a “joke.”
Miley started to become more and more noticed after Hannah Montana, as she transformed into a woman. Miley put her past Disney stereotype aside. The public didn’t like it; they didn’t want to see it. She cut her hair short, put on different clothes and loaded music videos to the internet of her “twerking.”
What most recently set the media off was her Video Music Awards performance with Robin Thicke, singing “We Can’t Stop” and “Blurred Lines.” I can see why people were shocked by this. It’s Miley Cyrus, the girl once so sweet and innocent. Every little girl used to look up to her, and she was such a good influence. So yeah, seeing her dance and act a little freaky at the VMAs was shocking.
However, what if it had just been some random dancer? People wouldn’t have made a big deal out of it. Since it was Miley Cyrus, she looks crazy, right? It’s just because Disney, the media and the general public wanted to preserve a certain image of her, as Hannah Montana.
Miley doesn’t want to act fake anymore to her fans. Why would anyone want to be fake? The media, however, doesn’t like that she is doing what she wants. The media is the only thing making a big deal out of this. Miley is trying to prove a point that she doesn’t care what the media thinks or says about her.
People just look at these things and think “Wow, she is a slut.” But nobody has noticed that she had been in love, and in a committed relationship, with the same guy for three years. Taylor Swift had 15 boyfriends in the last year, but since she doesn’t wear inappropriate clothing or dance provocatively, nobody seems to make a big deal about it.
Now that Miley has drawn a lot of attention to her new look, people are starting to make assumptions. However, maybe she is actually just super smart for making this transition, and is taking the heat as long as people are still talking about her. Some of the greatest artists in history continuously reinvented themselves: Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney Spears. They were all criticized, just like Miley Cyrus, for being outrageous. The public never grew bored with them, and they are still being remembered today.
Miley Cyrus is a genius for at least attempting to reinvent herself to follow the lead of these great artists, and to make a new identity for herself as an adult.
