MOVIE REVIEW: Katy Perry 3D « Filmmaking, Movies, 3D Animation ...

Pink. Pain. Perry. In a nutshell, Katy Perry’s concert documentary is about those three things.

Pink, a lot of it. From her wigs on stage to the clothes, the props and even strands in her natural hair when she’s off stage, this colour is a constant.

There’s something one seldom associates with super celebrities: pain. While Perry is a gazillionaire who broke Elvis Presley’s records and is loved the world over, she is an incredibly lonely workaholic whose marriage to British comedian and actor Russell Brand, is not on the rocks, but on the other side of those suckers.

It’s about the Perrys: from Christian beginnings to ka-ching. The second daughter of two travelling preachers, we see the evolution from Katheryn Hudson to Katy Perry.

Her family gives insight into the singer and we see testimonials from famous friends who include Rihanna, Jessie J and Adele.

Very bright, neon-coloured stage settings all over the world are OTT and in your face, allowing you to feel like a part of the show, thanks to 3D.

“How can you ever be too cartoony?” Katy asks an employee during rehearsal.

Sandwiched between those parts are some moving moments. It’s not just the montage of teens who say things like, “You make me believe that being weird is okay” about the ‘Hot ’n’ Cold’ singer.

It’s that as syrupy-sweet as she appears to be on the surface, so it’s hard not to see how genuine that part of her is. This cinematic journey endears Perry to the audience to the extent that her talking about her failed marriage is a teeny bit heartbreaking.

The performed songs feel like an afterthought – which is the one downside. The repetitive start of the show (where Perry pops up from under the stage) is used very well as a device to show how the personal begins to wear on the professional.

This documentary is for the Katy Cats. However, if you’re not even a little bit interested in Perry, you’ll find this to be a part of your life that you’ll never get back.

If you liked ‘Justin Beiber: Never Say Never 3D’ and ‘Beyoncé Live At Roseland: Elements Of 4’ then you might enjoy this.
