No matter where one sits there is no way not to be shocked for what is passing as political dialogue among the candidates running for the Republican Party nomination. The problem for the party is that it all is so damaging for the general election in 2016. One has to almost feel bad for the establishment part of the GOP who understands what it takes to win elections—and what we are witnessing is not the way for the GOP to secure the Oval Office.
After all we have seen this play out before.
First there is Donald Trump who is making a mockery of the seriousness of our national elections. He has made every attempt to undermine any attempts to make inroads with Hispanic voters. As of this morning he has even released his vision of what he would try to do as president in regards to the immigrants who do the work for so many businesses in this land.
In a 6-page report titled “Immigration Reform That Will Make America Great Again,” Trump is calling for an end to birthright citizenship, saying it “remains the biggest magnet for illegal immigration.” Trump again repeated his commitment to build a wall on the United States’ southern border. He would also increase fees on all temporary visas issued to Mexican CEOs and diplomats (and if necessary cancel them); increase fees on all border crossing cards — of which our country issues about 1 million to Mexican nationals each year.
It is all deplorable.
But not to be outdone are the candidate clowns who still do not understand that women’s health issues are not to be messed with—especially in a general election when young single women are a powerful voting constituency.
There is the soft-spoken and clearly out-of-his element Ben Carson who this weekend maintained his opposition to abortion, saying he believes life begins at conception, but he declined to say whether he feels there should be any exceptions, such as when a woman is impregnated during a rape.
Now there is a champion for the women who have just suffered a violent crime!
But when it comes to crazy responses none shined a more harsh light on one of the candidates than Mike Huckabee who firmly defended his no-exceptions position to abortion when asked about a 10-year-old Paraguay rape victim who was denied access to the procedure.
When it comes to cheap theatre the Republican candidates are providing a great summer season of entertainment. But the ones applauding now in the conservative camps will not be chipper once the final votes are cast in November 2016.
And they will only have themselves to blame.
