One of the best shows of its time and a definitive hit at any kind of awards (68 Emmy nominations and 11 wins does say something about the quality), Golden Girls was obviously meant to attract some other famous guest stars.
The first one I’d like to remember is none other than Quentin Tarantino, especially since, at this point in time, a sitcom about four elderly women doesn’t seem like his cup of tea.
And probably it wasn’t back then neither, since he said that he was nothing else than a glorified extra, portraying an Elvis impersonator (as he said, nobody wanted to hire him, so the gig was welcomed). He can be seen in the 4th season, episode 6.
Another major actor of our times that has appeared as a guest star is George Clooney, in the 24th episode of the second season. At that time, George Clooney was 26 years old and quite dashing – this is probably the reason why the bullet that hit him didn’t touch any vital organs (just kidding). Also, it is quite baffling to see him older nowadays and almost as famous as Betty White.
Leslie Nielsen is one other guest star that effectively needs to be remembered. He appears in the final episode of the series, brilliantly titled One Flew Out of the Cuckoo’s Nest. And, by all means, he was the one to be in this episode, because no comedic genius could have stolen the heart of Dorothy than him. In my opinion, it was the perfect ending of the Golden Girls.
But probably the best guest-star appearance in the entire series was the one of Dick Van Dyke, who played Ken in the 5th episode of the 5th series. As almost always in such cases, he is a suitor for Dorothy’s hand, a most successful layer during the weekdays and a clown at children’s parties on the weekends.
Dick Van Dyke’s role is one to be remembered – in 1990, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for this role, at the category Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.
