Here’s the music lineup in central Arkansas for this week and weekend:
WEDNESDAY
Country singer Shane Lee was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and raised in Georgia and Florida, and those country roots come through in his music. But there’s also a touch of rock guitars in his sound, and this country rock sound is what one hears on Lee’s EPs Kissin’ In the Tail Lights and the August-released Joyride. Now living in north Georgia, but loving artists from Garth Brooks to Led Zeppelin, Lee visits Stickyz. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 day of for the 18-and-up show with the music starting at 8 p.m.
The Oxford American magazine’s restaurant and cultural experience spot South on Main offers some free music — as the venue does every Wednesday evening — with its free Local Live concert series. This week: Singer-songwriter Chris Michaels, a musician who has played in bands such as the Boondogs, toured with Mississippi jamband group Beanland and performed with musicians such as Jim Dickinson, Isaac Alexander and Kevin Gordon. Michaels has also released two solo albums, including 2009′s Morning & Night and 2013′s Hallowed Ground. Chris Michaels & the Cranks take the stage at 7:30 p.m.
THURSDAY
Need more free music? Check out Charlotte Taylor and Gypsy Rain at the William F. Laman Public Library’s Main Library as they play Live at Laman. The free show starts at 7 p.m. in the library’s lecture hall. Taylor is a powerhouse vocalist, and Gypsy Rain is a muscular blues rock band with soul. Think Etta James and Bonnie Raitt with a touch of Janis Joplin, and you have Taylor. Throw in a rock-solid backing band behind Taylor, and you have blues that rock with soul.
The new album from Americana band The Black Lillies is titled Runaway Freeway Blues, but don’t think of the Knoxville, Tennessee, outfit as some explosive act of shotgun-blast bluegrass. The band — frontman and guitarist Cruz Contreras, harmony vocalist Trisha Gene Brady, multi-instrumentalist Tom Pryor, bassist Robert Richards and drummer Bowman Townsend — has appeared at the Grand Ole Opry more than 20 times along with appearances at festivals such as Bonnaroo and MerleFest. And The Black Lillies appear at Stickyz. The all-ages show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 day of show.
FRIDAY
Central Arkansas meets Portland, Oregon, when Conway doom metal act Apothecary and Little Rock down-tempo, aggressive metal quartet Crankbait play a Vino’s show along with Portland acts Honduran and Drunk Dad. Honduran is a trio who plays what is sometimes called “power grind” or noise rock. Drunk Dad is an outfit who performs hardcore punk mixed with noise rock. The doors open at 9 p.m.
The show this Friday night is Eric Church at Verizon Arena (and don’t forget opener Dwight Yoakam). But kicking off Church’s The Outsiders World Tour stop in North Little Rock is Brothers Osborne, and following their opening set, John and T.J. Osborne head south of the Arkansas River for an Eric Church after-party show at Rev Room. Signed to EMI Records Nashville in 2012, Brothers Osborne got their start in late 2013 with the release of their first single, “Let’s Go There,” and the duo released their self-titled debut EP on Tuesday. The EP includes their current single, “Rum,” and four other tunes from the Maryland-raised, singer-songwriter sibling duo. A full-length debut album is expected in early 2015. The Rev Room show starts at 9 p.m. for the 18-and-up show. Cover is $10 or free with an Eric Church ticket stub.
First things first: The title of Birmingham, Alabama, hip-hop outfit The Green Seed‘s July-released album Drapetomania is pronounced druh-pet-oh-may-nee-uh. Secondly, if you think all Southern-bred hip-hop is Dirty South hip-hop, get out of the ’90s and listen to The Green Seed. The Green Seed visits White Water Tavern, and the music starts at 9:30 p.m.
SATURDAY
KABF 88.3 FM‘s Thursday night show Girls! presents Girls! Night at White Water Tavern with an all-female concert. The bill includes Russellville folk singer-songwriter Jamie Lou, punk/cosmic/horror band Divorce Horses, honky-tonk country singer-songwriter Bonnie Montgomery, Little Rock hip-hop artist and producer Kari Faux, and more. The music starts at 9 p.m. with a $5 cover, which goes to KABF and Girls!
SUNDAY
Of course, Louisiana-bred swamp rocker Tony Joe White is known for his 1969 song “Polk Salad Annie,” which hit No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. White’s Muscle Shoals, Alabama-created, horn-powered country rocker about a poor Southern girl and a mess of “poke sallet” has been covered by artists such as Elvis Presley. But there’s so much more to White, and the singer-songwriter proves it with Hoodoo, his 2013 release from Yep Roc Records. This long history of swamp, soul and country rock is what White brings to Juanita’s. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the music starting at 7:30 p.m. There’s a $10 cover.
Little Rock’s Mosaic Templars Cultural Center welcomes the Last Southern Gentlemen Tour featuring Ellis and Delfeayo Marsalisfor a night of music. There are a limited number of balcony tickets for $25 and $35, and general admission tickets are $50. The night of jazz from the members of the famed New Orleans jazz family (Delfeayo is the jazz trombonist son of jazz pianist Ellis) starts at 7 p.m. The fundraising event celebrates the fifth birthday of Mosaic Templars.
MONDAY
Shabazz Palaces comes to Rev Room. What does that mean? Well, the band is a Seattle-based, experimental hip-hop group signed to Sub Pop Records who released their sophomore album Lese Majesty in July. Sub Pop calls the record a “unique and glorified offering into our ever-uniforming musical soundscape.” The opening act is to be announced, but expect the music at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $13 day of for the 18-and-up show.
TUESDAY
Psycho-Western band The Frontier Circus is now a five-piece with the addition of Justice Williams on guitar. Williams joins Victor El Valiente on guitar, Lightin’ Lou on bass, Daredevil Dave on drums and Frontier Dan on guitar and vocals. Catch the new Frontier Circus during a White Water Tavern show. Opening for the Circus is country singer-songwriter GR Jones from Massachusetts. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. with the music at 10 p.m. There’s a $5 cover.
