Elvis Memorial Week was during week 33 and I went to the Candlelight Vigil at Graceland which is held each year to memorialize Elvis Presley’s death. The city closes the streets in front of Graceland and fans gather to wait for the Vigil and socialize. Some groups set up little shrines of memorabilia. This year the street closing was running late so I wasn’t able to get many shots of completed shrines before I lost the light.
I’m always amazed by the diversity of Elvis fans. Some come with their families, including young kids, some as couples, some in fan club groups but they’re united by their fandom and they come from all over the world to visit Memphis. They’re lovely people.
Little Elvis
This little guy saw my camera and struck a pose. He was one of at least six little kids I saw dressed as Elvis.
Setting up the Shrine
Two Elvis(es)
I shot these with the OM-1. It was a bit difficult shooting crowds and people with a manual focus, manual exposure camera. Next year, I’ll use an autoexposure camera to at least eliminate one variable.
