Over the 2012/13 recovery period, I blogged about several gay/lesbian/bi/trans/whatever trendy other words are included (which is why I prefer the inclusive Queer) facebook groups dedicated to equality.
Well they turned out to be narrowly focused on sexual equality with hets and not any meaningful equality as people.
Because I was an atheist and posting actual history in response to people’s claims, I was told I was unwelcome.
I tried joining atheist mainstream groups and Elvis groups and ended up booted from those places too.
It’s as if there is no place you can be your whole self, just facets.
In any case, in a recent atheist group that I joined, I ended up in a conflict with three male posters all at once, separate arguments.
In the end, I blocked one particularly childish man, and I did not quit the group.
so while I cannot cope with debate or conflict in person, I am starting to be able to participate online, partly because the screen names are just that – one of the reasons people are more rude and agreessive online is because their is no sense of an ongoing relationship
and I think people mostly use the internet to compensate for the powerlessness they feel in real life
Being agoraphobic in the digital age is not the hardship it once was
I think perhaps the digital age is making everyone more isolated and unsocialized
we are not learning how to read body language and facial expressions staring at screens instead of people
and responding to those is a huge part of communication
I would like to believe that if these people I was in conflict with online over the last couple of years saw my face or hear my voice, they wouldn’t have behaved as aggressively or as .. to not put too fine or cultured a point on it – like cunts
but given my actual in person experience
I have seen too much craven indifference on people’s faces in person
it has gotten to the point where I can no longer trust anyone who appears friendly
I wait for the knife they are hiding
