Four Tet is a leftfield electronic-music institution, but he’s somehow never met a gigantic, sweeping pop hit that he didn’t feel like remixing. In the past couple of months, he’s reworked pieces of pop-radio bait from

According to legend, punk rock began as a reaction against classic-rock excess. But every revolution calcifies into tradition eventually, and every rebellious kid has to grapple with growing up. On top of that inexorable life cycle, we’re living in an era of synthesis and quasi-universalism, when most of the taboos that helped keep music scenes segregated have become as archaic as the rotary phone. As a result, these days the lines between classic rock and punk are blurrier than they’ve ever been.

Game Of Thrones. What is it? A board game? A reality show? You never hear anyone talking about it, and you for sure never see multiple people in the same subway car reading the books. Has anyone ever tweeted about an episode, even once? Hard to say! This HBO show has so far flown completely under the radar, just kidding, nearly every single person loves it and they all talk about it pretty much nonstop. Shabazz Palaces’ Ishmael Butler is one of those fans, and I chatted with him recently about the show, his favorite moments, and why he wants to see Eric Andre on the Iron Throne.
KELLY: Were you on board with Game Of Thrones from the beginning, or did it take some convincing to get you to watch it?

May has been, in a lot of ways, kind of a frustrating month. Summer blockbuster season is pretty much in full swing now, meaning there will be a lot of massive action set-pieces accompanied by orchestral scores that can be hard to tell apart from one film to the next. The truly inspired pop-song moments will diminish. This is understandable: A lot of times there’s a certain capital-E Epic tone to these blockbusters that just seems to want those big scores, not a clever music montage. (Even within that framework, there’ve been some missed opportunities — if that brief moment of Elvis Presley’s “You’re The Devil In Disguise” in the Godzilla’s Las Vegas sequence lasted a little longer it could’ve been hilarious and great.) On the other side of things are a bunch of indies that don’t seem to be playing anywhere. As far as TV goes, May is the zone in which a lot of shows are finishing up, but few are starting new seasons. It’s a bit of a transitional period in that sense, before June becomes crowded with AMC’s new Halt And Catch Fire (which is set in the ’80s, so you just know it’ll appear in this column), HBO’s new The Leftovers, the return of Orange Is The New Black, and the surprisingly reinvigorated True Blood’s last run. I’m excited to see what those shows do with music next month. As for May, I wound up turning to some places I normally wouldn’t look for good soundtracks, and wound up finding some surprises.

This week’s list walks the line between calm, serene, stately beauty and extreme blood-splooge trash. Both can be awesome! And both are perfectly legit music-video approaches. But this week, we’ve got two of the latter and three of the former. Blood-splooge trash is winning, as it usually does. Check out this week’s list below.

Outside of, say, Led Zeppelin reuniting and then bringing Bob Dylan to the stage for a song, it’s honestly not possible to imagine a rock-star duet with this level of wattage. Last night, during a Rolling Stones show in Lisbon, Bruce Springsteen gorilla-walked onstage to join the band for a spirited rendition of “Tumblin’ Dice.” The Boss had previously joined the Stones onstage in New Jersey a couple of years ago, but you presumably half-expect Springsteen to show up anytime any band plays in New Jersey. I can’t imagine anyone saw this Portugal appearance coming. Check out fan-made video of the performance below.
