Frankie Laine: Nov 1949
From Leonard Cohen’s introduction to Memories during his June 8, 1985 concert at the Warfield in San Francisco:
There is a singer mentioned in the first line of the first verse, the singer Frankie Laine. He’s to be remembered for his stellar rendition of “Jezebel.”… There’s another song of his: “Black Lace:” “Lady beware, every time that you wear lace, black lace”. Very good song.
Also, Gerrit Terstiege, writing at the Leonard Cohen Facebook page, commented that during his interview with Leonard Cohen, the Canadian singer-songwriter, in talking “about songs he loved when he was young,” “mentioned ‘Black Lace’ by Frankie Laine.”
Black Lace was released Jan 1950 on Mercury Records as a shellac 10″ 78 RPM Merco Plastic record. Credits: Mer. 5363 Carl Fischer (piano) Frankie Laine (vocals) unidentified orchestra, Harry Geller (conductor) and others. The flip side was Frankie Laine – The Cry Of The Wild Goose.
