Yesterday it was officially announced that Bruno Mars would be headlining the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show, presented by Pepsi, and it was met by a mixed reaction from audiences. The doubt mostly stems from the fact that Bruno Mars, compared to the other titans who have graced the stage the last few years, Beyoncé, Madonna, Black Eyed Peas, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, is relatively a new artist.
His debut album Doo-Wop & Hooligans dropped in 2010, and now it’s 2013. It’s been three years since he made his official debut as a solo act, and he’s already set to headline the SuperBowl whereas there could be an argument made for much more tenured acts like Pink, JAY Z, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake (although we’re sure he’s been permanently banned from the stage), or any similar pop artist who’s career spans the past two decades or more.
So we present these question to you, those few naysayers: When has Bruno Mars ever let us down? When has Bruno Mars ever proven he wasn’t an entertaining performer? We, as ThisGoesIN, are here to argue the case for Bruno Mars as worthy to tear down the SuperBowl stage with a few performances below that should change your mind.
Case 1: Bruno Mars “It Will Rain” (X-Factor UK, 2011)
Vocal Chops: Pop stars with soul influences have always been some of the best vocal performers (ie: Pink, Adele, Justin Timberlake) and Bruno Mars belongs in that class. To hang with the best, you have to be able to sing like the best, and Bruno Mars brought it in 2011 with his single “It Will Rain” to the X Factor stage. The haunting performance featured Bruno Mars standing on stage alone, no band, no theatrics minus the powerful neon heart beating behind him. He brought every inch of soul to the stage with him, and delivered.
Case 2: Bruno Mars “Valerie (Amy Winehouse Tribute)” (MTV Video Music Awards, 2011)
Fun Factor: Bruno Mars knows how to wake up a crowd and have some fun, and there’s no other performance that personifies this as the tribute to Amy Winehouse at the 2011 VMAs. While many expected a heartfelt tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, Bruno Mars and his band absolutely brought it with an uptempo variation of the jazzy single. Kicking off as a toe-tapper, Bruno Mars transformed it into a full-fledged boogie fest with one of the standout performances of the night. Even Tyler, The Creator (who won an award earlier in the night for the song he dissed Bruno Mars in) couldn’t resist putting his hands together for Bruno.
Case 3: Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Sting, The Marleys (Bob Marley Tribute) (The GRAMMYs, 2013)
Collaborations: In the past few years it’s been all about who you bring to the stage. Madonna managed to grab LMFAO & Cee Lo Green for her SuperBowl performance last year back, and earlier this year Beyoncé reunited Destiny’s Child. We’re not sure which friend Bruno Mars is going to call-up for this show, but his collaborations with others have been stellar and the perfect portrayal of this is the Bob Marley tribute earlier this year. Kicking off with his single “Locked Out of Heaven” he was joined by the legendary Sting to perform the funky record, and eventually Ziggy & Damian Marley and Rihanna took the stage to perform “Could You Be Loved.”
Case 4: Bruno Mars “Dirty Diana” (Project Ethos, 2010)
It Factor: Every performer who has touched the Super Bowl stage has possessed that It Factor. That indescribable quality that makes them a star. Bruno Mars has earned himself five No. 1′s faster than any male artist since Elvis Presley. You knew early on that Bruno Mars had that star quality about him, and one of his earlier performances of one of Michael Jackson’s most critically-acclaimed songs, “Dirty Diana” seals the deal.
Case 5: Bruno Mars “Gorilla” (MTV Video Music Awards, 2013)
Explosiveness: When headlining the SuperBowl stage, there need to be a few explosive moments (remember Beyoncé’s pyro guitar of awesomeness earlier this year), and Bruno Mars has proved he can bring the explosion just as good as anybody. His latest televised performance occurred at the MTV Video Music Awards, performing the rock, bedroom romp. Complete with pyros, lasers, lights, it made for quite an experience. However, in the end it was Bruno Mars’ conviction to the track that eventually sold it to the world.
