While the U.S. debates the merits of attacking Syria over a chemical weapons attack on its own people, let’s not forget that the nation that flouts international standards more than any other is North Korea.
A few days ago, Kim Jong-un’s ex-girlfriend, Hyon Song-wol, a popular singer, was executed with 11 other people for making a sex tape that was distributed in China. All were musicians publicly executed by machine guns. Kim’s relationship with Hyon ended years ago when his father objected to the relationship.
The sex tape has emerged in China, and it is nothing like the porn video the world has been led to believe. North Korea may be a prudish place, but there is not any sex in the video. The video has three women dancing to a version of Elvis Presley’s “Aloha Oe.”
Trumped up charges of a sex video are obscuring some other reason for these executions. It may be that the video was being sold in China and the capitalist endeavor was offensive to the party hacks in Pyongyang. More likely, the real reason rests with Kim’s wife, Ri Sol-ju.
Ri was a member of the same musical group that Hyon belonged. Rumors have persisted that Kim reignited his relationship with Hyon prior to his marriage to Ri. Some rumors even suggest that the two continued to see each other. If that was true, it is doubtful that Ri could have had Hyon executed. Yet experts believe that Ri may be the one behind Hyon’s execution. If so, that makes Ri as ruthless as Kim and the rest of the North Korean elite. That she could take part in ordering the execution of Hyon is disgusting, but to have 11 more members of the same musical group that she performed with executed is horrible. Their families were made to watch and then shipped to labor camps as well.
North Korea makes the other nations that defy international standards look civilized.
