What if Elvis Presley had never left the building?
Thirty-six years ago Friday, owing to pressures we can only just imagine and self-indulgences we can assume only too well, Elvis Presley died. But what if, by some remarkable stroke of experiences, he had lived? USA TODAY contributor Ken Barnes imagines how his craft might have continued.
Aug. 16, 1977: Around 5 a.m., Elvis gets the pressure to play a short racquetball, part of the conditioning regimen he has been halfheartedly following to produce for a tour scheduled to create shortly. He calls his cousin and closest guide, Billy Smith, who awakens his strife, Jo, and they join Elvis and his girlfriend, Ginger Alden, and forefront completely for Graceland's court below a covered walkway. It's raining, and Billy remarks that he's appalled of it.
"Ain't no problem," Elvis says, "I'll take carefulness of it." He raises his hands, and the thunder-shower stops on cue. Elvis says, "If you've got a inconsequential faith, you can a close the rain."
During the racquetball position, he accidentally smacks himself on the shin with his racquet. "Boy, that hurts!" he says, displaying a smutty-looking edge. Billy and Elvis' other associates are alarmed and fasten, despite Elvis' protests, that with a travel days away, a tour to the hospital would be thrifty. Elvis is treated for difficult bruising, and a doctor decrees that he reprieve overnight for surveillance.
