Portland - Fifty people who work at Maine Medical Center will be losing their jobs.

According to a press release, 175 "budgeted and vacant positions" will be eliminated, as will 50 " currently filled positions."

The changes will be effective on August 16th.

" We are in the middle of a new era in health care," said Richard Petersen, president of Maine Medical Center, in a press release. " The budget that has been developed for fiscal year 2014 balances the current economic challenges in the health care industry today, prepares appropriately for the future, and meets the demands of those who look to us for care from the perspective of both quality and cost."

According to the release, more than 120 people accepted a voluntary early retirement program that was announced in July. 374 people were eligible for the program.
