Almanac: Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog" tops the Billboard charts ...


On August 16, 1977, the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Elvis Presley, died.


It's intriguing, and more than a little amusing, to imagine contemporary American music stars serving in the military. How would Kanye West fare in the Air Force? Would Adam Levine cut it in the Army? How long would Eminem last in basic training


For that was the day Elvis Presley's version of "Hound Dog" topped the Billboard chart for the very first time. Born in a small two-bedroom house in Tupelo, Miss., Elvis was only 21 years old that summer. He'd created a sensation by performing the song
