I was torn between which recorded event to watch first Tuesday night when I got home from work — American Idol or the Ohio State-Indiana Big Ten basketball game.
Obviously I chose Idol, even though I love Ohio State.
And it was the right choice.
The girls — for the most part — gave us another night to remember and I wonder how in the world this field of 10 will be trimmed to five come Thursday night. I’m still hoping for a late change in the rules, allowing seven or eight girls to go through and only two or three of the guys.
Oh, one more thing. Ohio State beat Indiana. It was truly a great night.
Here’s how I saw the girls:
1. Angie Miller: I loved her being back at the piano. She seems so much more comfortable. She put on more of a show sitting at that piano than most of the singers did Tuesday evening parading around the stage. Simply outstanding. The song she sang was the beautiful “Never Gone” by Colton Dixon. (Yeah, that Colton Dixon, from 2012 Idol.) I gave Angie the No. 1 nod, but I would have no problem if you feel Kree or Candice should have the top spot.
* Keith Urban: “When you play the piano, that’s when I hear you the clearest.”

Angie Miller
* Nicki Minaj: “The trumpets should sound when you walk in the room, little girl. You have your own signature sound.”
* Randy Jackson: “America, a star was born.”
2. Kree Harrison: OMG, this girl is on fire. She continues to improve, we are seeing such incredible, believable emotion from her vocals. She gave us some Faith Hill tonight, and I didn’t want the song to end.
* Keith Urban: “I do love to hear you sing … it’s crazy.”
* Nicki Minaj: “Your sexiness level went up another notch tonight.”
* Randy Jackson: “You are such a natural.”
3. Candice Glover: “Ordinary People” by John Legend was outstanding. Candice makes me enjoy songs I might not otherwise even consider interesting.
* Keith Urban: “The level of singers tonight is crazy … tonight was superb, Candice.”
* Randy Jackson: “That was ridiculous.”
4. Aubrey Cleland: She more than did justice to one of my favorite songs in recent years, “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie, but it was not a “wow” performance. Randy compares her to Rihanna, but I’m still thinking Alicia Keys. Still, she should have no trouble getting through to the finals.
* Mariah Carey: “You so obviously have multi-platinum potential.”
5. Adriana Latonio: “Stand Up For Love” by Destiny’s Child was a horrible, horrible song choice for the girl I felt was No. 1 coming into this round. I wholeheartedly agree with the judges — it was something you would hear on the Miss America pageant. She’s in a borderline position here and is in danger of being a huge semifinal upset victim. It’s all about the song choice, bay-bee.
* Nicki Minaj: “I think the song was a little too big for you in the beginning.”

Breanna Steer
6. Breanna Steer: Being a fan of the ballad, I did a 180 with Breanna this week. Her “Flaws and All” by Beyonce was a perfect choice to show us she has a soft, tender side, as opposed to last week’s vamp routine. The judges were extremely split on this performance, but I liked it right from the first note. But with this year’s field, Breanna might be left on the outside looking in come Thursday. I’ll make the prediction right now that if Breanna advances it will be because of Adriana’s pitiful song choice.
* Keith Urban: “You find the right songs that show who you are as a singer.”
7. Janelle Arthur: She seemed to struggle at times with “If I Can Dream” by Elvis Presley, which was surprising for someone with such great voice control. She could be in trouble. It’s conceivable we could be without a true country girl (no, Kree is not country) at the end of of Thursday night’s results show.
* Nicki Minaj: “You are like a little marshmalllow I want to eat. I think the sky’s the limit for you.”
8. Amber Holcomb: I can almost sense some Natalie Cole in Amber, but her “I Believe In You And Me” by Whitney Houston left me a little flat.
& Nicki Minaj: “Your vocals are surpassing this competition.”
9. Tenna Torres: A lot of screaming and unintelligible lyrics. I think she sang “Lost Lyrics” by Faith Hill.
* Keith Urban: “Don’t let the camera take you out of your emotion.”
10. Zoanette Johnson: As good as Zoanette was a week ago, she was equally bad on Tuesday night. She gave us her interpretation of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” Saying it was terrible would be a compliment. Adding insult to injury was one of the worst wardrobe choice in Idol history.
* Randy Jackson: “That was a mess, babe.” (That was being kind.)
