I’m going to go for someone who wasn’t an American and never set a foot in the country, but who has probably done more for the country than many Americans have. James Smithson. Surname sound kinda familiar? It should. Smithson in his will bequeathed all his fortune to his nephew, Henry James Hungerford, on the stipulation that if said nephew should die without any heirs then the money would go to the US government for the “establishment for the increase & diffusion of knowledge among men.” That establishment is today known as the nation’s attic, the Smithsonian Institution.
Today the Smithsonian covers a wide range of interests through it’s various museum complexes and other facilities. Which means a wide range of areas for the Smithsonian to help educate the American public. And you don’t even have to travel to any of the Smithsonian Museums or facilities to see what the Smithsonian has to offer. They also have an affiliate program that loans museums affiliated with the Smithsonian various artifacts for temporary display. Not to mention traveling exhibits and of course Smithsonian Magazine and Air & Space Magazine.
Smithson’s fortune was only $500,000 when it came here in the 1830s (a large sum for that time and as of 2005 about $9,235,277 when adjusted for inflation). But his legacy has created an institution which strives to preserve not only history (both natural and man-made) but also to help us better understand that history and the world in which we live.

George Washington Carver is a good choice.
If it hadn’t been for him, Elvis wouldn’t have had peanut butter for his peanut butter and banana sandwichs.
But, I think John Walsh, from the TV show, “America’s Most Wanted”, has used (and continues to use) his family tragedy, the kidnapping and murder of his son Adam, to bring child molesters, murderers and exploiters to justice.
He is, truly, a modern-day hero.
