The Hollywood hunk is currently promoting Gangster Squad, in which he plays a police officer who battles to take down a ruthless mob king.
Although Ryan is renowned for portraying tough characters, the star insists he has a much softer side. When asked how he would like to spend his downtime, Ryan recalled a relaxing few hours spent shooting a film scene.
"I did this scene in Lars and the Real Girl where I was in a room full of old ladies who were knitting, and it was an all-day scene, so they showed me how. It was one of the most relaxing days of my life," Ryan told the latest issue of GQ Australia.
"If I had to design my perfect day, that would be it."
Ryan is amazed by how creative knitting can be. He loves the idea of spending time making something special for a loved one.
"And you get something out of it at the end,” he mused. “You get a nice present. For someone who wants an oddly shaped, off-putting scarf."
The 32-year-old star – who is dating Eva Mendes - also spoke about his childhood. Ryan laughingly recalled how he was made “head of security” for his uncle, who was an Elvis Presley impersonator.
He was fascinated by the outfits his uncle wore for his shows and would spend hours watching him prepare before he took to the stage.
"When I was a kid, it (my uncle) was certainly the most interesting thing going on in the house. He made his own costumes, did all the sequins - it took months,” he smiled. “And I became a bit like his shadow, helping him when I could. He was in the mirror, working on the voice and singing, and he (slowly) created this character, and then he put together an act and performed in a local talent show. And because I was so interested, he made me the head of security. As a joke."
