Traditional wedding songs like “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley and “At Last” by Etta James have been making their mark on weddings for years. And don’t get me wrong, they’re beautiful for a wedding and encompass what the big day is all about. But if you’re looking to tread off of the list of most commonly used tunes, that’s okay too! There are a wide array of songs out there that are just as perfect for every aspect of a wedding, whether it’s the processional, father-daughter dance or the memorable first dance.
Processional
If you’re not a “Here Comes the Bride” type, there are plenty of other alternatives for your grand entrance down the aisle. For a more modern twist on the processional, you could opt away from the classical and move toward ballads with lyrics. It may be the perfect way to set the stage – especially with a song containing powerful words. Kiss My Tulle’s favorite non-traditional songs are “Cowboy Take Me Away” by the Dixie Chicks (if you’re a Southern bride) and “Marry You” by Bruno Mars – an upbeat, adorable tune to march down the aisle to.
Father-daughter dance
Many popular father-daughter dance ballads are a little too sappy for my taste. If you’re looking for a bit more upbeat song, Offbeat Bride suggested the following rock anthems that dads would love: “When You Need Me” by Bruce Springsteen, “You’re My Best Friend” by Queen, “American Girl” by Tom Petty or “She’s a Rainbow” by the Rolling Stones.
If you’re looking for a slower, more emotional beat, there are a few diamonds in the rough that are rarely heard but perfect for a father-daughter dance. My personal favorites include “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s (it’s a mouthful – but a beautiful song), “Sweet Pea” by Amos Lee or “Blue Eyes” by the Cary Brothers.
First dance
If you want to keep your first dance more along the lines of romantic and traditional, take a listen to “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes (for such a young kid, he sure knows how to write a love song!). For a more timeless and oldies feel, go for songs like “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys or “Sweet Thing” by Van Morrison. How about a more fun, upbeat tune that you can really dance with your groom to? Check out “You Can Make It If You Try” by Sly & the Family Stones or Jack Johnson’s “Better Together.”
