The Renaissance Center celebrates Mardi Gras when it presents Les Kerr and the Bayou Band in a special concert Friday, Feb. 1, in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre. Tickets are $37 and include an authentic New Orleans buffet at 6:30 pm with the concert at 7:30. A Shreveport, Louisiana, native who grew up in Mississippi, Kerr and his band have been hosting a Mardi Gras concert at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe for 21 years. Their Fat Tuesday 2013 Tour includes stops in Clarksville, Murfreesboro, Nashville and Alabama and kicks off with the Feb. 1 concert in Dickson. Kerr describes his music as “hillbilly blues Caribbean rock and roll” that is influenced by the traditional Cajun music he grew up with on the Gulf Coast but combines the delta blues of the area with the rock and roll he loves, especially Elvis Presley. Kerr said the show also includes a tribute to Fats Domino, one of New Orleans’ most famous music residents who was rescued from his Ninth Ward home during Hurricane Katrina. An Ole Miss graduate, Kerr worked as a news reporter for several radio stations in Mississippi and Louisiana before moving to Nashville in 1987 to pursue a music career. The Fat Tuesday Tour dinner buffet will include a selection of New Orleans-style dishes such as crawfish and shrimp etouffee, Mardi Grad King Cake and other Cajun favorites. Although staff cannot serve alcohol, the event is BYOB for beer and wine. French for Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras is a traditional multi-cultural celebration in which participants indulge in rich foods and parties before the Lenten season leading to Easter begins on Ash Wednesday.
