Doylestown Photography Club Members,

While Tim Ryan and Ron Schmidt entertained questions and explored Lightroom and post processing in our first Photo Café, Jason Hoover presented the Focus Ring on Composition. Thanks to Tim, Ron, Jason and everyone who participated in our pre-meeting time.

  2. Exhibitions – Sue Ann Rainey highlighted the following opportunities (also refer to the Galleries and Exhibition section of the Forum):

  3. The club’s Post Holiday Party will take place this Saturday, January 19th at the Limelight Restaurant & Bar in Doylestown. Members are free, appetizers and soft drinks provided by the club, guest are welcome @ $12 ea.

  4. Photo Quest on Exploring Shallow Depth of Field was presented. Next month’s assignment is “Show Us Your Best.”

  5. Due to an illness, the night’s guest speaker, Illia Barger, will reschedule her presentation to a future date – perhaps the March meeting.

  6. Photographer Of The Month: Annie Leibovitz presented by Chris Detwiler.

Annie was born in Waterbury, CT, but her father’s military career took the family all over the country and around the world. Her mother, a dance instructor, was her inspiration for photography. Annie’s first pictures were of her family.

Considered one of the best portrait photographers, Annie took time to get to know the person and portrayed them in an intimate way. Her portraits of famous people include: John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Bette Midler, The Blues Brothers, Meryl Streep, Keith Haring, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Moore, and more…

Annie’s latest book, Pilgrimage, explores not portraits, but the working environments of people who she feels have changed the world in some way as well as places that hold an interest for her. From Niagara Falls, Emily Dickinson’s house, Walden Pond (Thoreau & Emerson), and Gettysburg, to Ansel Adams, Georgia O’Keefe, Eleanor Roosevelt and Elvis Presley.

Annie, who never asks anyone to smile for a picture, is well known for her composition and sense of color. She likes digital photography and feels that it is better for capturing how things really look. In her opinion, one of the most important things for young photographers is to learn how to see. Annie was the first woman to have her work hang in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

The rest of the meeting provided a social time for members to interact as well as continue the Photo Café discussions.

See you on Saturday for the Post Holiday Party and on February 11th for our next meeting.
