Philip, I offer you this not merely because it has a tenuous link both to your question and religion but, pitifully, because it is also true.
When I ran a secondhand book emporium (granted, not an empire), I had the usual assortment of eccentrics among my staff. Some proved indispensable, others illiterate but the only one I ever ‘let go’ was someone who, at the pinnacle of a catalogue of errors, housed a dusty tome called ‘The Biology of Mosses’ in the religion section.
I actually wept.
