“Elvis is the greatest cultural force in the twentieth century. He introduced the beat to everything, music, language, clothes, it’s a whole new social revolution – the 60’s comes from it.”
-Leonard Bernstein, 1960s

1956 was pivotal year in America in many ways. Thrusting us into 1956 and beyond were the thrusting hips of Elvis Presley, which would change the music as well as the cultural scene in America as well as the rest of the world.

Elvis Presley’s first single topped the pop charts in 1956. “Heartbreak Hotel,” the nation’s No. 1 Billboard hit for eight consecutive weeks.

These photos were taken by Alfred Wertheimer and are published in a book, “Elvis 1956,” which was published to mark the occasion of the Smithsonian’s Elvis at 21 exhibition.
