With apologies to Frank Sinatra, 2012 wasn't a very good year for celebrities with homes on the market, and maybe not so good for anyone else with a home to sell either. The lesson of the recession and the housing market crash remains this: It doesn't matter who you are -- everybody pretty much took it on the chin if they tried to sell a house.

Here's a sampling of what happened to Los Angeles-area homes owned by celebrities in 2012. And before you start screaming at us like crazy headless chickens, we know this isn't a complete list. Among the missing are private sales, pocket listings and celebrities we just can't bear to talk about anymore (read: Real Housewives of Anywhere.)

  • 12: Anjelica Huston Reportedly Accepts $12 Million Offer

Anjelica Huston made waves in September when Page Six got a hold of an investment proposal involving her "Fortress" home and the Venice Social Club. In the documents, Huston had accepted a $12 million offer to turn her artist compound into an exclusive club that would offer cultural programming like "gourmet bathing" to a select group of Angelenos willing to pay $2,000 per month in membership dues. Alas, the seltzer water tastings and surfing excursions were not to be -- Curbed LA noted in November that Huston's home has since re-hit the market with an asking price of $13.9 million. Huston had first put the property on the market in 2010 for $18 million, after her husband died.

  • 11: Ellen Degeneres Buys Brad Pitt's Home For $12 Million

Funnygal Ellen Degeneres bought Brad Pitt's house in Malibu in December of 2011 for $12 million and flipped for $13 million last August because, lord knows, she needs the extra pocket change.

  • 10: Elvis Presley's Former Home For $12.9 Million

If celebrity ownership doesn't help sell a home, we're figuring that former celebrity ownership likely won't either. Still, there are exceptions to any rule and we just had to put Elvis' former home on this list. The Bel-Air mansion where the King ruled came on the market in October at $12.9 million. Presley lived there with his wife Priscilla and their daughter Lisa Marie. The gate to the property is filled with signatures -- dare we call it graffiti -- of adoring fans proclaiming their love for the world's original rock 'n roller. Warning to future buyer: Fan pilgrimages will continue.

  • 9: Mark Wahlberg Lists His Home At $12.99 Million

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. So believes Hollywood honcho Mark Wahlberg, who has been trying to sell his Beverly Hills home since before my hair went gray. In 2008, it was listed at $16 million and didn't sell. It came back on the market in 2011 at $13,995,000, then relisted in July of this year for a million less. This is the place where Wahlberg installed a 2,500-square-foot detached gym with a full-size boxing ring he used to train for his role in "The Fighter." The executive producer of "Entourage" and "Boardwalk Empire" has already built another home for himself and we suspect he would like to sell this one already.

  • 8: Jim Carrey Lists Home For $13.95 Million

The Man of a Million Faces Jim Carrey has his Malibu beach home on the market at $13.95 million. The 2,900-square-foot beachfront "bungalow" was a part-time residence for the funny-man and much of the home's appeal is the fact that the Pacific Ocean is steps away from the front door.

  • 7: Sheryl Crow Lists Home For $15.95 Million

There is much to like about the house Sheryl Crow wants to sell for $15.95 million. It sits pretty all rustic-like up in the Hollywood Hills. She bought it in 1993 and the current price tag is about $15 million over what she paid, wrote Realtor.com. Crow's multi-building compound sits on 11 gated acres. The main house is a Spanish Revival built in 1924 and has, naturally, a music room. There is also a three-bedroom Craftsman bungalow built in 1909 and a small cottage that dates from 1885. The popular singer-songwriter is back in Nashville, the city of her heart.

  • 6: Vidal Sassoon's Home For $17.9 Million

The salon world shed a tear and poured one out for industry leader Vidal Sassoon when he died this May. But little did the world know that Sassoon had a second love: architecture. CasaSugar notes that his 1959 Bel-Air home, designed by Richard Neutra, was one of Sassoon's favorite homes. It hit the market in November at $17.995 million.

  • 5: Kelsey Grammar Lists Home At $18 Million

Kelsey Grammer may have become the celebrity we most love to hate, but his track record as a home flipper with a realistic handle on the market is still intact. In May, he put a Bel-Air home he owns on the market at $18 million. He never lived in it, but bought it to flip. He dropped the price to $16,995,000 in August, then $15,995,000 in November. In late November, it was taken off the market. We're thinking it will show up sold for around $15 million. He bought it in 2007 for $13.7 million, according to public records.

  • 4: Leonardo DiCaprio Lists Home At $23 Million

Leonardo DiCaprio's Malibu Colony home came on the market in May as a $75,000-a-month rental and then was listed for sale at $23 million in November. It remains unsold. Leomania still reigns in most circles, but celebrity power rarely translates to the reason why anyone buys a house. DiCaprio, who is now 38, is one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood, according to Forbes magazine, which may be why he likely won't be in any big hurry to sell this seven-bedroom Cape Cod in the guard-gated Malibu Colony.

  • 3: Ellen Sells Compound To Ryan Seacrest For $37 Million

Sometimes it almost seems that celebrities like to trade homes with one another. Ellen DeGeneres sold her Beverly Hills compound to Ryan Seacrest in the spring of 2012 for a reported $37 million. She had listed it in 2011 for $49 million. The three-acre property DeGeneres sold to "American Idol" host Seacrest has 15,000 square feet of living space (if you add up all the buildings). The main house clocks in at 9,200 square feet. There are also two guesthouses plus an extra three-bedroom house that could be used as staff quarters. She and actress Portia De Rossi were married in the gardens here in 2008.

  • 2: Kelly Wreastler Lists Home At $39 Million

Designer Kelly Wearstler put her Beverly Hills mansion on the market at $39 million, dropped to $36 million in July and took it off the market in November. It could be sold or it could just be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is an honest-to-goodness problem that impacts a lot of listings when the winter holidays approach. A home with a severe case of SAD temporarily disappears from the MLS and then miraculously reappears after Jan. 1 with a new MLS number. It thus appears to the uneducated eye that it is a new listing, and who doesn't love new? While some agents swear people, in fact, do buy homes in December, others recognize that the public is distracted with buying other things. Rather than let their listing languish, they convince the seller to just remove it from the market until January. As for Wreastler's house? If Old Hollywood is an officially recognized architectural style, this 14,000-square-foot estate is that. It was designed in 1934 for the Hollywood power couple William Powell and Carole Lombard. Wearstler bought it in 2004.

  • 1: Terry Semel Lists Home At $50 Million

Maybe you don't consider former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel a celebrity. He doesn't have a reality TV show and nobody is recommending that maybe he needs to go into rehab. But this money man put his Michael Graves-designed oceanfront home in Malibu on the market in May at a whooping $50 million, dropped it to $40 million and sold it for $37 million in September to Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison. Ellison already owns about a dozen Malibu properties and we have no idea why he wanted another one. Feel free to speculate. The latest horse in the stable is a three-building glass structure on Carbon Beach.
