Blurred line in culture « intro to mass commuicaton

Masculinity and Femininity

1. How was Masculinity and femininity merged in rock and roll?

Rock and roll brought about the exploration of sexual identity, and orientation. Masculinity and Femininity merged in rock and roll because a lot of male had an androgynous attitude. A lot performers were actually viewed as rock stars with some traits of women.

2. What was Little Richard’s reason for dressing androgynous?

Little Richard dressed androgynous mainly because he didn’t want to become a new sex symbol to young white audiences, mainly white girls.

3. Research gender roles in music and blog about an event or artist that has crossed this line.

Boy George crossed this line, and from the time he was young, he ” found it hard to fit within traditional masculine stereotypes.” The music of Boy George is blue-eyed soul, which is influenced by rhythm and blues and reggae. Whereas his style is very flamboyant and androgynous.

North and South

1. How did music affect culture after the Civil War?

After the civil war, rock and roll really started to combine the influences from the north and the south. Whereas blues, R&B, and rock and roll began to rise from the South, the North had started to develop its own musical style.

2. Who were the pioneers of this merge?

The pioneers of the merge were those like Elvis Presley, and Buddy Holly. These were people that were influenced by the black style and amazed their listeners in both the North and the South while introducing a mix of culture. It’s a trend that also continued, because even now there are white teens that are captivated by the urban style of hip hop music.

3. According to Sam Phillips of Sun records the key to record sales in rock and roll was to find a white artist that sounded black. What are your opinions about this?

I believed that this actually a really interesting yet beneficial idea. The fact that it was a white man meant that he would appeal to the white audience, but the idea that he sounded black would make the music appealing to a larger audience of black people

Sacred and Secular

1. What is Sacred vs Secular in music about?

Sacred music is music that is usually spiritual in nature and used to honor a God or religion. Secular music is more about glamour and appearance and delves into realms of sexual content and is promoted for material gain. We see sacred music today through gospel and other ritualistic music but, almost all other types of music now is secular music

2. How did Ray Charles blurr the lines

Ray Charles blurred the lines in a very interesting ways. Many would describe Charles as a womanizer and his songs refelcted that. He used gospel-like music arrangements to cross over to secular audiences. Songs like “I Got A Woman” and “Hallelujah, I Love Her So” are both examples of how he blurred secular and sacred

3. Research how we still see this today in our culture.

Today’s culture we see many artists who are blurring the lines between sacred and secular. A prominent artist who does this is Lady Gage. Lady Gaga was raised as a Roman Catholic and attended The Covenant of Sacred Heart in Manhattan. she put judus in one of her songs. Judas was the disciple that betrayed Jesus and in her song she talks about how she’s in love with Judas.
