Describing Madison Ray’s performance at the RAWards Semi-Finals showcase is best accomplished by likening it to Mick Jagger’s hyperactive, prancing performance of “Satisfaction” at Hampton Coliseum (circa 1981). There was a lot of bravado, hip thrusting, grooving, and bouncy choreography. Madison Ray and All the Single Ladies were on a mission.
“The entire presentation is meant to evoke the experience of something old and something new,” says Ray. “From the music to the visual presentation… What I wear reflects my inspirations in a few different ways. I try to style my hair in a version of the pompadour, which is a throwback to Elvis Presley and James Brown. I love to wear military jackets as a nod to Michael Jackson and Prince. And I always rock old school high top sneakers to assert something urban and classic. The bandanas are my own personal touch. The color and the variety make it the perfect accessible accessory. I’ve had some great ideas for some new pieces, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise.”
Every part of the band’s presentation is carefully thought out and deliciously pop-tastic. There is an air of wit that comes with each performance that shows a sense of humor, as well as showmanship.
Ray is musically inspired by the “the power of James Brown, the soul of Stevie Wonder, the range of Michael Jackson, and the heart of Bob Marley.”
Look for the band’s first album, “Starship to Mars,” January 5th, 2013. The album was produced at Capp Audio Productions.
