GREENVILLE – There have been a lot of books written about Rock n’ Roll, but a local author recently released a new book from a perspective most people have, but never thought to write about. Darke County native Tom Everhart has been keeping a journal of his experiences as a fan of the music and as an independent deejay and was encouraged by Allan Graham, step brother of The Doors’ Jim Morrison, to have his journal published. Everhart’s book 0 to 60 in Five Minutes: My Stroll through Rock n’ Roll Music was released in May.

When he ordered his first 50 books Everhart told the publisher, “I would like to keep one for myself, but what am I going to do with the other 49 books.” It didn’t take long before he sold all 50 and ordered another 50. Since May he has sold over 150 books. The book will be available at a book signing on Aug. 10 at Bach to Rock, 4-6 p.m. Additional book signings are also being scheduled.

The book takes readers on a journey from Everhart’s childhood when he first discovered Rock n’ Roll. He remembers buying his first 45, Bill Haley and the Comets, Rock Around the Clock, and his first album, Elvis Presley’s Pot Luck. His collection over the years would eventually grow to over 18,000 45s and countless albums.

Although there are lighter moments in the book, such as pretending to be a deejay when he was a kid and details on some of the ways he was able to meet his Rock n’ Roll heroes, there are also some darker moments. Everhart recalls his one and only experience with LSD. Although it was a legal drug at the time, after his experience of taking the drug in California and waking up in Las Vegas, he vowed never to use that drug again. “I was in bad shape,” he said.

Everhart has enjoyed his stroll through Rock n’ Roll and it is evident in the book. He has also enjoyed his work as a deejay. One of the highlights of his career will be to deejay an upcoming 25th class reunion. Everhart pointed out this will be special because he deejayed all of this classes high school events when they were in school.
