August 13
Deborah Kerr
Young Bess (12:30 pm CST) - The future Elizabeth I fights court intrigue in the turbulent years before her ascension to the throne. (DK plays Elizabeth’s stepmother and romantic rival in this semi-historically accurate drama with hearty female roles.)
August 14
James Cagney
The Public Enemy (6:30 am CST) - An Irish-American street punk tries to make it big in the world of organized crime. (The quintessential crime movie, also starring Jean Harlow. The ending left me speechless.)
One, Two, Three (1:00 am CST – Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, end of the day) - A Coca-Cola executive in West Berlin tries to keep the boss's daughter from marrying a Communist. (HILARIOUS! One of my all-time favorites I can watch again and again. A rare JC where he’s not shooting or singing. DO NOT MISS!!)
August 15
Lillian Gish
I’ll be honest, I’m not very familiar with LG. But the one I’ll be checking out is
Portrait of Jennie (2:45 pm CST) - An artist discovers his gift when he falls for a beautiful ghost.
August 16
Elvis Presley
Viva Las Vegas (10:30 pm CST) - A race-car driver falls for a pretty swimming instructor who wants him to slow down his career. (EP and Ann-Margaret. Can’t go wrong with that.)
August 17
Katherine Hepburn
Probably my second-favorite actress, after Myrna Loy. Pretty much any time you turn on the TV today will be great, but here are the highlights:
Adam’s Rib (3:30 pm CST) - Husband-and-wife lawyers argue opposite sides in a sensational women's rights case. (My favorite movie KH made with famous partner Spencer Tracy. Also with comedic great Judy Holliday)
Pat and Mike (5:15 pm CST) - Romance blooms between a female athlete and her manager. (Made primarily to show KH’s famous athleticism, another fun Tracy/Hepburn comedy)
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (7:00 pm CST) - An aging couple's liberal principles are tested when their daughter announces her engagement to a black doctor. (Part of the canon of great classic movies, also starring Sidney Poitier. Still gives food for thought, even in the 21st Century.)
Bringing Up Baby (11:15 pm CST) - A madcap heiress upsets the staid existence of a straitlaced scientist. (A young adorable KH co-stars with Cary Grant as they chase a tame leopard throughout a small New England town.)
August 18
Freddie Bartholomew
Captain’s Courageous (7:00 pm CST) - A spoiled rich boy is lost at sea and rescued by a fishing boat, where hard work and responsibility help him become a man. (Great family movie based on the novel of the same name. My brother’s favorite movie as a kid.)
August 19
Eva Marie Saint
36 Hours (9:00 am CST) - Nazis kidnap a key American intelligence officer and try to convince him that World War II is over. (Fantastic psychological suspense also starring *sigh* James Garner. SoldierMan loved this one.)
North by Northwest (7:00 pm CST) - An advertising man is mistaken for a spy, triggering a deadly cross-country chase. (The Hitchcock classic also starring Cary Grant. EMS’s famous good-bad girl role.)
Hope you enjoy!
