First national sideburns day marks most Hirsute Olympics since London 1908
The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that it expects many people watching the men’s marathon in central London on Sunday to be wearing real or stick on side burns to celebrate the first National Sideburns Day a tribute Bradley Wiggins and all hirsute Olympians
The campaigners say that sideburns, sometimes known as mutton chops, and named after US Civil War General Ambrose Burnside were often worn by Victorian politicians
Bradley Wiggins has reinvented the post-1945 tradition of sideburns from Elvis Presley to Noddy Holder and Alvin Stardust on, turning them into something no self respecting fashionista would be without
The BLF says that Wiggins sideburns demonstrate the importance of hirsuteness in sporting performance and the aerodynamic qualities of facial hair.
BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, National Sideburns Day on Sunday marks what has been the most Hirsute Olympics since London 1908
