Today at Graceland, the Recording Industry of America (RIAA) will present the Elvis Presley Estate with a Diamond Album certification for “Elvis’ Christmas Album”. This award represents a landmark of 10 million copies sold for Elvis Presley’s popular collection of holiday songs. “Elvis’ Christmas Album” is the top-selling Christmas album of all time.
The original release of “Elvis’ Christmas Album” came out in 1957 and initially sold 3 million copies. In 1970, RCA released another edition of the album which omitted four gospel songs and added two additional Christmas songs sung by Elvis. The Diamond certification being awarded today represents sales from the 1970 version. That means that both editions have sold a total of 13 million copies.
he award presentation will take place during Elvis Week which marks the 35th anniversary of The King’s passing. The Diamond award is just one of many RIAA awards that will be presented to Presley for his chart-breaking record sales. Today, Elvis will receive five more platinum awards representing 1 million copies sold of various singles and albums, and four more gold awards representing 500,000 copies sold of various albums.
These awards will be added to the massive collection of awards that Elvis Presley received during his life and since his death. Many of these awards are on display at Elvis’ Graceland home in Memphis. The former racquetball court that Presley had built on his property in the 1970s is now a huge display room showcasing hundreds of awards. One has to see in person the walls and walls of gold records covering the walls at Graceland from top to bottom to fully comprehend the magnitude of Elvis’ everlasting popularity.
