[CanuckBlues] Today [August 4] in Blues « Canadian Roots Radio

by Arthur Dusome (reprinted with permission)

The great jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong was born on this 4th day of

August in 1901 in New Orleans, LA. Armstrong was the first important

soloist in Jazz, and his raspy vocals and engaging personality, along

with that expert , soulful trumpet, made him Jazz`s most popular,

influential and important musician in its history. My Dad was a huge

fan

of Louis Armstrong, and had recordings of him dating from the 30s to

the

60s. The first music that ever reached my ears was probably Louis

Armstrong. There is such a wealth of Louis Armstrong recordings on

CD,

it`s nearly a endless list. One I recommend to Blues fans , (along

with

ANY of his early stuff with The Hot Five, or The Hot Seven), would be

1954s “Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy” on Columbia/Legacy.
