Put quite simply, Heartbreak Hotel is a revelation. It sounds nothing like anything that came before it and very little has matched it since. Purists will always argue that the real Elvis is to be found in the songs recorded during the Sun Sessions but the ghostly vocals and morbid lyrics totally suit Elvis’s voice. Scotty Moore is amazing on the guitar and Floyd Cramer’s bar-room piano playing is incredibly apt. Put together, this makes one of the best Elvis Presley songs ever. There is a reason why they called him The King.
