Following the recent news that an Elvis Presley hologram is being created for use in various entertainment projects comes word that the respective estates of The Doors' Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix also are interested in the development of virtual versions of the late rock stars.

Doors manager Jeff Jampol tells Billboard.com that he's been looking into developing a multimedia show featuring 3-D images, lasers and high-fidelity audio for eight years.  Jampol has tapped the talents of U.K. music video director Jake Nava.

"We're trying to get to a point where 3-D characters will walk around," offers Jampol.  "Hopefully, 'Jim Morrison' will be able to walk right up to you, look you in the eye, sing right at you and then turn around and walk away."

Meanwhile, Hendrix's sister, Janie, who heads the company that controls the guitar legend's music and likeness, has been collaborating for around one year with a London-based company called Musion Systems on the creation of a hologram Hendrix.

"For us, of course, it's about keeping Jimi authentically correct," she explains to Billboard.com.  "There are no absolutes at this point."

Regarding the creation of a computer-generated Elvis, Digital Domain Media Group exec Ed Ulbrich explained that his company "is not repurposing old footage that the world has already seen."  He adds, "We're making totally original and exclusive performances so that fans can have new experiences."
